Unit Objectives: Students Will Be Able To (SWBAT):
SWBAT record at least 15 items into the "L" column of a KWL chart for Ancient China by the end of the unit.
SWBAT actively read and interact with visual, verbal, written, and electronic resources/data to interpret data and demonstrate comprehension skills and an increase in knowledge about Ancient China.
SWBAT explain the Chinese concept of filial piety and explain their perspective concerning this practice after interacting with provided examples and materials.
SWBAT practice history and archaeology skills, while learning about Ancient China by reading about and exploring the artifacts and contents of ancient tombs.
SWBAT discover the significance and purpose of Oracle Bones in Ancient China as they interpret Oracle Bone translations and civilization aspects related to warfare, childbearing, and the Late Shang Dynasty.
SWBAT explore the British Museum site on Ancient Chinese writing in order to learn how Oracle Bones were discovered and historical aspects of Chinese writing found in artifacts. Students can try to match the correct Chinese character to a word and picture.
SWBAT work with a partner to decipher provided quotes from different belief systems along the Silk Road (Buddhism, Confucianism, Christianity, Daoism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Shintoism) and develop logical reasoning to support their opinion about which category (Prayer and Worship, Good and Evil, The Golden Rule of Reciprocity, Blessings and Love, Compassion and Tolerance, Creation, and Life After Death) the believe the quote belongs in. As a class we will compare/contrast and discuss the different belief system ideas. SWBAT analyze artifacts from along the Silk Road and appreciate the creativity and craftsmanship of the artifacts, while using their responses to the artifacts to practice their poem and/or short story writing skills. SWBAT explore the importance of music for ancient civilizations along the Silk Road and learn about different musical instruments from provided sources and then complete a reflective writing prompt of at least 4 sentences.
SWBAT gain knowledge of the different roles of the social classes found within Ancient China by interpreting artwork and a provided reading, while also practicing collaboration skills by working in small groups.
