Kievan Rus

The Slavs divided into three major groups:  the southern (Croats, Serbs, and Bulgarians), western (Poles, Czechs, and Slovaks), and eastern Slavs (Ukrainians, Belorussians, and Russians).  Vikings began moving into Slavs' territory in the late A.D. 700s and over time Vikings became rulers of the Slavs, who called the Viking rulers the Rus.  The Vikings and Slavs blended into one people and around A.D. 900 a Viking leader named Oleg created a Rus state around the city of Kiev and this state became known as the Kievan Rus.
