During the Middle Ages, Chinese rulers brought growth, order, and peace to China. Farming and trade brought wealth, new technology was developed and there was a golden age of art and writing. Buddhism became a major religion in China, but the Chinese government supported Confucian ideas. Genghis Khan and the Mongols built a vast empire and then his son Kublai Khan conquered China too. China's Ming rulers strengthened the government, which brought peace and prosperity. Trade voyages went to parts of Asia and to East Africa.
