Celts living in Britain fled to Ireland to avoid the Anglo-Saxons. At this time, Ireland had no cities and the people were divided into clans who farmed, raised cattle and lived in small villages. Wealth was based on cattle ownership but they also took to the sea in coracles. Christianity greatly influenced the Irish and many scholars, artists, monks, and merchants came to the region to avoid Germanic attacks. Irish monks helped Christianity to flourish though their practices varied from those of the Roman Catholic Church since they were out of contact during the Germanic invasions.
